WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
Saturday's CIAA championship game between Winston-Salem State and Virginia State has been canceled after WSSU's quarterback was attacked during a luncheon, according to WXII's Kenny Beck.
Starting quarterback Rudy Johnson was injured Friday during an altercation at a CIAA event just a day before the conference championship game.
The fight took place in a bathroom as the annual CIAA championship luncheon was taking place at the Anderson Center on WSSU's campus, WSSU officials said.
Johnson was hit in the face and had visible swelling in his right eye, WSSU officials said. He was treated at a hospital and released.
Sources told Beck that two Virginia State players have been arrested.
WSSU police are investigating the incident. Players and coaches from both WSSU and VSU attended the event, along with players from other CIAA colleges receiving awards.
Below is the full statement from the CIAA:
"We understand that some Virginia State University and Winston-Salem State University student-athletes were involved in an incident during the time of today's luncheon event. The police are currently investigating the incident and are speaking with the individuals involved. Leadership from the CIAA and the participating institutions are fully cooperating."
